A Black Phoebe perches alert near flowing water
The Black Phoebe is California's signature flycatcher, always found near water sources where it hunts insects with remarkable precision. These birds demonstrate incredible site fidelity, often returning to the same nesting locations year after year. Their distinctive black and white plumage and tail-wagging behavior make them easily recognizable along streams and ponds throughout the western United States.
