Golden Crown

Distinctive yellow and black head stripes identify this large sparrow

The Golden-crowned Sparrow sports one of the most distinctive head patterns among North American sparrows, with its bold yellow crown stripe bordered by black. These large, robust sparrows breed in Alaska and western Canada, then migrate to the Pacific Coast for winter. Their plaintive three-note song has earned them the nickname 'weary Willie' among birders.
