Painted Canyon
Layers of geological history create a natural painting in stone
This view showcases the incredible geological diversity of Valley of Fire, where different layers of sedimentary rock create a natural painting with bands of red, orange, yellow, and white that chronicle millions of years of environmental change. Each color represents different depositional environments—from ancient beaches to vast sand seas to marine environments—creating a visual timeline of Earth's history written in stone. The park preserves over 2,000 petroglyphs that demonstrate how Native Americans have revered this landscape for thousands of years.
