Stone Elephant
Hvítserkur rises from the sea like a prehistoric creature drinking
Hvítserkur, a 15-meter-tall basalt sea stack on Iceland's Vatnsnes peninsula, bears an uncanny resemblance to a drinking elephant or prehistoric creature. This natural sculpture was formed by volcanic activity and shaped by centuries of wave erosion. Local folklore tells of a troll caught by sunrise and turned to stone, while geologists recognize it as a volcanic plug—the hardened core of an ancient volcano. The stack serves as a nesting site for arctic terns and provides a dramatic focal point for the rugged coastline.
