Point Reyes extends into the Pacific as California's westernmost reach
Point Reyes represents one of the most geologically fascinating locations on the California coast, where the Point Reyes Peninsula sits on the Pacific Plate, slowly moving northwest along the San Andreas Fault at about 2 inches per year. This dramatic headland experiences some of the foggiest and windiest conditions on the West Coast, creating a unique ecosystem that supports over 490 bird species and serves as a critical stopover for migrating wildlife. The area's isolation and harsh conditions have preserved it as one of California's wildest coastal environments.
