Frozen Cathedral

Towering icebergs create a natural cathedral of ice and light

Some icebergs in Jökulsárlón reach cathedral-like proportions, with spires and arches carved by wind, waves, and melting that create natural architecture of breathtaking beauty. These massive ice formations can weigh hundreds of tons and stand 30 meters above the water's surface, with 90% of their mass hidden below. The lagoon serves as a staging area where icebergs slowly melt and break apart before flowing out to sea, making each visit a unique experience.
