Nature's Palette

Oxidized volcanic material creates a rainbow of desert colors

The Painted Dunes of Lassen showcase nature's incredible ability to create art through volcanic processes, where oxidized cinders and ash have been weathered into brilliant reds, oranges, yellows, and purples that rival any artist's palette. These colors result from different minerals in the volcanic material reacting with oxygen and water over centuries, creating iron oxides that paint the landscape in warm hues. The dunes represent a unique high-elevation desert environment within the temperate Cascade Range.
