This panoramic perspective captures the full scope of the Painted Dunes, showing how volcanic forces have created a high-elevation desert environment unique in the Cascade Range. The dunes span several hundred acres and represent one of the few places where visitors can witness the immediate aftermath of relatively recent volcanic activity. The lack of vegetation in much of the area allows the full spectrum of volcanic colors to be displayed without interference, creating a natural museum of volcanic processes.
