Granite Sentinels
Ancient granite formations stand guard over the valley
The granite sentinels of Yosemite have stood watch over the valley for millions of years, their massive forms representing some of the most enduring and stable geological features on Earth. These formations, composed of Sierra Nevada granite that crystallized deep underground over 100 million years ago, have been exposed and shaped by erosion to create the distinctive domes, spires, and cliffs that define Yosemite's character. Each formation tells a story of deep time and the slow but inexorable processes that shape our planet.
